研究 & 研究 Assistants (RAs)

The purpose of the APS graduate program is to teach the techniques for outst和ing research. Graduate students are generally supported on 研究 Assistantships (RAs) after their first year. 作为注册会计师, a student works on independent research under the guidance of an advisor, often several projects leading to publication are completed before beginning thesis work. All students complete the 比较, an independent project of five to eight months' duration which typically results in publication.

Students work on research not only with APS professors, but also with many of the associated institutions in Boulder.

教学 & 教学 Assistants (TAs)

The APS department strongly encourages the development of good teaching skills. Most students are supported by a teaching assistantship (TA) for their first year at CU, many students choose to supplement their research with teaching later in their graduate careers. However, the APS department 没有助教要求.

Integral parts of the teaching resources at Colorado are the Sommers-Bausch Observatory (SBO) 和 Fiske天文馆，都是在校园里. SBO houses two computer-controlled 20" telescopes 和 a science-grade 24" telescope. The observatory is extensively used for undergraduate classes, public open houses run by graduate students are held every Friday evening. The 24" reflector is used primarily for graduate education, graduate students have nearly unlimited access to it for their research. 菲斯克天文馆, one of the major planetaria in the country, is used both for teaching undergraduate classes 和 for hosting a wide range of public shows 和 astronomy talks. APS讲师 约翰·凯勒 is the Director of Fiske天文馆 和 coordinates education 和 outreach programs.

APS is one of about 40 departments on campus that has a Lead Graduate Teacher. The Lead Graduate Teacher arranges workshops, 提供建议, serves as a liaison between the TAs 和 the faculty，以及…… between the department 和 the Graduate Teacher Program at CU.

The APS department is also very active in astronomy education 和 outreach in the community. Graduate 和 undergraduate students are involved with producing 和 operating shows at Fiske. Students also regularly work with 和 visit local school classrooms, develop curricular material in coordination with the Boulder Valley school district, coordinate 和 present at regional educator workshops.
